As a child one of my favorite activities was riding my bicycle. I rode laps around our rain drop shaped driveway pretending one of two things; I was a cyclist winning a race or an equestrian riding a horse. I look back on my imagination in wonderment because as I grew cycling and horses grew with me and have a huge impact on how I define myself as an adult.
Writing and teaching are also childhood passions that shape who I am today. At a young age I filled journals learning to consider my thoughts, feelings and question my place in the world. In play, I pretended to be a teacher, and as a young adult took jobs that allowed me to work with other people as a guide, instructor, and mentor. It is my desire to help other people feel empowered by learning a new skill whether I am teaching them to paddle a canoe, ride a horse, write a paragraph or analyze a novel. To turn my passions into a career I attended Plymouth State University where I graduated with a Bachelor of Art in English, with a concentration in writing, and a minor in Women's Studies. After attaining a foundation for writing I felt a need to continue my education and attended the Upper Valley Educators Institute to obtain my New Hampshire State Teachers Certification 5-12 English Education. Still unsatisfied educationally I returned to Plymouth State University where I am currently working on a Master of Education.
Since obtaining my certification I have worked as an English teacher in a variety of settings from traditional public school classrooms to experiential classes outdoors and these diverse experiences have enhanced my ability to be flexible while working with young people. For the last three years I have worked at the New Hampton School as an English teacher and Academic support Instructor. Working at a private boarding school is a unique experience giving me the opportunity to work with my students in all aspects of their lives.
